Curious Minds, Clear Answers

PRE-ARRIVAL

Yes, most travelers will need a visa to visit Sri Lanka. However, citizens from 35 countries are eligible for free travel access without a visa fee. Check if you’re eligible by visiting this link. For those who still need a visa, we recommend applying online at least 72 hours before your departure to avoid long queues on arrival.

We suggest a practical approach. For the latest advice, please contact us directly or visit the official government tourism website for accurate information.

DURING YOUR STAY

The official currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR), and it’s not available for purchase outside the country. Although USD is sometimes used to quote prices, especially at hotels, it’s not widely accepted for transactions. We recommend bringing some foreign currency just in case you need to exchange it, but ATM withdrawals often provide better exchange rates than currency exchange bureaus.

Some banks might block your card in Asian countries, so it’s wise to notify your bank before traveling. The best ATMs for foreign cards are from Commercial Bank, Sampath Bank, Hatton National Bank, Standard Chartered, and HSBC. The maximum withdrawal per transaction is typically around LKR 100,000 ($335) with a fee of around LKR 300 ($1.95). Commercial Bank ATMs usually offer a higher limit of LKR 200,000 ($670).

Yes, there are ATMs in the arrival lounge after customs. If one ATM doesn’t work, you can try another. There are also bank counters and money exchange services available.

Credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted in larger establishments like supermarkets and department stores. However, smaller local businesses may not accept cards. American Express is accepted in fewer places. Keep in mind, the exchange rates provided by currency converters are just estimates.

*** Please note that we do not accept credit card details for security reasons. Instead, we offer a secured payment link for Visa and Mastercard transactions, which can be sent via email.

Yes, tipping is customary. We suggest $10 per staff member per day as a guideline, though it is not obligatory. Most restaurants and cafes that cater to tourists include a 10% service charge, but additional tips are always appreciated by the staff.

Yes, always keep your money and valuables on you or securely locked away in a safe.

Absolutely! Please contact Mark at Mark@topnotchvillasinsrilanka.com or Whatsapp for assistance with airport transfers, AC vehicles, private charter flights, seaplanes, motorcycle rentals, and more.

Yes, you can. However, we recommend against it. Local driving habits can be challenging to get used to, and taxis are affordable. If you still prefer to hire a vehicle, we can provide car rental contacts.

Make sure your tuk-tuk driver knows your destination and agree on the fare before starting the journey. Carry smaller denominations like LKR 50, LKR 100, and LKR 500, as getting the correct change can be difficult.

The top private hospitals are Hemas in Galle and Asiri in Matara. If long-term hospitalization is required, Durdans in Colombo has a good reputation. In an emergency, you will initially be taken to a government hospital and later transferred to a private one if needed.

Yes, pharmacies are available throughout the country, and many common remedies can be purchased over the counter.

Yes, we recommend bringing an old or unlocked smartphone so you can purchase a local SIM card. Dialog is the mobile provider with the best coverage. SIM cards and top-up cards are widely available, and you can even get one upon arrival at Colombo Airport. Don’t forget to bring your passport, as it’s needed to register your number.

LEAVING THE VILLA

Yes, we can send you a wine list as part of your pre-arrival information. Contact Mark@topnotchvillasinsrilanka.com or Whatsapp for assistance. Note that alcohol laws in Sri Lankan villas can be a bit confusing, so we recommend keeping alcohol in your bedroom and bringing the minimum amount downstairs.

Also, be aware that no alcohol can be sold in public on Full Moon Poya days, which occur once a month.

Sri Lanka has 25 public holidays per year, the highest number in the world. These holidays cover Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian festivals, with Full Moon Poya days being particularly significant. On these days, the sale of alcohol, meat, and fish is prohibited, and some shops and businesses may be closed.
