Main Living Areas

Thambili House is a beautiful two-storey historic house located inside Galle Fort, right next to the Fort Rampart. The house was built around 300 years ago by a Dutch spice trader during the time when Sri Lanka was known as the world’s only source of prime-quality cinnamon. The house has been carefully restored by Rohan Aluwihara, a protégé of the famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Today, Thambili House combines its old-world character with modern comfort, privacy and a high level of luxury. The interiors are decorated with genuine antique Ebony and Calamander furniture from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, together with contemporary local art. The house keeps many of its original features, including uneven walls and cut cement floors, giving it a true Galle Fort feel.

Bedrooms

All 3 bedrooms are located on the upper floor and are fully air-conditioned. Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with a hot water shower. Master Bedroom – King Bed, sleeps 2 guests The Master Bedroom has a genuine antique Ebony king-size four-poster bed. Large French windows open onto a private terrace with rare, uninterrupted sea views and beautiful sunset views. The room is decorated with genuine 16th, 17th and 18th Century antique Ebony and Calamander furniture and contemporary local art. The spacious en-suite bathroom has small Roman-style pillars, inspired by the history of Galle Fort and the many seafarers from different countries who lived and worked in the Fort over the centuries. Ginger Suite – Twin Beds, suitable for up to 3 guests The Ginger Suite has two twin beds and is designed as a comfortable family room. It has views towards the famous Lighthouse Street, the swimming pool and the Galle Lighthouse. The room also has a private terrace and a large en-suite bathroom with a shower and standard bath. It is tastefully furnished and includes the facilities expected from a luxury villa. Children below 6 years are free of charge, while an additional charge applies for a second child. Cinnamon Suite – King Bed, sleeps 2 guests Named after the famous spice, the Cinnamon Suite is designed as a cozy loft-style room. It does not have a particular outside view, but its design makes excellent use of the available space and reflects the traditional style of a Galle Fort room. The suite has a king-size bed, private en-suite bathroom and all the facilities expected from a luxury property. The Cinnamon Suite has welcomed many famous artists and writers who have stayed for long periods. It is especially suitable for guests who want peace, quiet and a high level of privacy.

The Master Bedroom opens onto a private terrace with uninterrupted sea views and beautiful sunsets.
